Electrifying the Urban Food Chain

Three Volvo VNR Electric trucks are joining City Harvest’s fleet as the organization expands its food-rescue operations.

City Harvest has added three Volvo VNR Electric trucks to its fleet as part of an initiative aimed at reducing emissions from freight operations in New York City’s Hunts Point neighbourhood.

The trucks replace three diesel vehicles and will be used to rescue and deliver food throughout the Bronx and across all five boroughs. Each truck is equipped with a battery-electric transport refrigeration unit, allowing both propulsion and refrigeration to operate with zero tailpipe emissions.

For fleet professionals, the deployment offers an example of how battery-electric trucks can be integrated into demanding urban operations, particularly where vehicles operate close to residential areas, businesses and other sensitive locations.

Putting electric trucks to work

The trucks are joining City Harvest’s fleet as the organization prepares to expand its food-rescue operation. The nonprofit plans to rescue 100 million pounds of food this year and distribute it to food pantries, soup kitchens and other community programs throughout New York City.

Much of the operation will take place in and around Hunts Point, a major freight hub in the Bronx. The community sees more than 15,000 truck trips on an average workday, while the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center accounts for approximately 12% of all food distributed in New York City.

That combination of high freight activity and dense surrounding communities makes Hunts Point a significant test case for zero-emission trucking. The Bronx Is Breathing: Reimagining a Cleaner Hunts Point initiative is focused on reducing truck emissions and improving public health while continuing to support the area’s important role in New York’s food supply chain.

The infrastructure equation

The project also highlights one of the central considerations for fleets moving to battery-electric trucks: charging infrastructure.

City Harvest will initially charge the vehicles at a new charging installation at the Fulton Fish Market Cooperative in the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center. The charging strategy is expected to evolve as additional infrastructure becomes available.

MN8 Energy is developing a freight-focused public charging hub in the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center that is planned to open in 2029. The facility is expected to include 32 DC fast chargers, including charging stalls for heavy-duty Class 8 trucks, along with 10 Level 2 chargers.

For fleet operators evaluating electrification, the approach illustrates the importance of considering vehicles and charging as part of the same deployment strategy. In this case, the trucks are being introduced alongside infrastructure designed specifically to support freight operations.

The three Volvo trucks are supported by a $10 million award through the New York Clean Transportation Prizes program, administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) in partnership with other state agencies.

Beyond tailpipe emissions

The City Harvest deployment also demonstrates that the potential impact of electric trucks extends beyond the vehicle’s powertrain.

Because these trucks use battery-electric refrigeration units, the refrigerated loads can be handled without relying on a conventional diesel-powered refrigeration system. The trucks are also expected to operate more quietly than their diesel predecessors, an important consideration for vehicles making deliveries during early-morning or late-night hours.

For City Harvest, the technology supports an expanding food-rescue operation while addressing emissions and noise in a busy urban freight environment. For fleet professionals, the deployment illustrates how fleet electrification can involve much more than replacing a diesel powertrain with a battery.
