Volvo Trucks Wants to Reduce Unplanned Breakdowns

Aiming to mitigate unplanned downtime for commercial motor carriers, Volvo Trucks North America is deploying updated Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) inducement software across its new and existing heavy-duty truck portfolio. Reflecting updated regulatory guidance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the software calibration alters how vehicle electronic control units respond to Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) faults and low DEF fluid levels.

Under previous control strategies, emissions-related sensor faults typically triggered a rapid engine power derate within a four-hour operating window, forcing trucks into a severe speed restriction of 5 mph. The updated software logic extends the driver repair resolution window up to 160 hours while increasing the final inducement speed cap to 25 mph. This operational adjustment allows long-haul drivers to safely transport freight to a designated service facility or fleet terminal without requiring immediate roadside towing assistance.

“These updates are about giving our customers more flexibility and confidence when they are on the road,” said Peter Voorhoeve, President of Volvo Trucks North America. “By extending the repair window and increasing the final inducement speed, we are helping drivers keep their trucks on the road and safely reach a service location, reducing the risk of unexpected downtime and supporting the uptime and productivity our customers depend on every day.”

Assembly plants began installing the software in May 2026 on all-new VNL and VNR models powered by D13 VGT and D13 TC engines. For vehicles already in service, Volvo Trucks will execute remote over-the-air (OTA) updates for legacy model year 2024 and newer trucks by late summer. The software expansion will continue through 2027 to cover post-2014 models by the second quarter of 2027 and all eligible post-2010 models by year-end 2027, with non-OTA models receiving the update through authorized Volvo Trucks dealership service bays.
