The all-new 2026 Nissan Sentra earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's highest distinction, TOP SAFETY PICK+, underscoring Sentra's comprehensive approach to passenger protection and driver‑assist technologies.
IIHS testing evaluates crashworthiness, headlight performance and the capability of safety and driver assistance systems; Sentra engineers enhanced all three of those areas in developing the all-new 2026 model.
The Sentra received the institute's highest rating of "Good" in all three of the IIHS crash tests (small overlap front; moderate overlap front; and side impact), thanks in large part to 10 standard airbags.
Coupled with a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) starting at CA$25,2682 (CA$27,887 selling price)., Sentra proves peace-of-mind isn't a luxury for Nissan shoppers – it's standard.
Enhanced driver-assistance hardware and software
The 2026 Nissan Sentra uses a completely new ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) suite compared to the outgoing model, with comprehensive enhancements that delivered improved performance in IIHS crash-avoidance testing.
A new generation front camera and front radar in the 2026 Sentra significantly enhance the vehicle's ability to detect hazards. With its wider field of view and 4K-class higher‑resolution imaging, the system can identify obstacles earlier and with greater accuracy, supported by overall improvements in sensing performance.
"Remarkable advancements in camera technology have allowed us to enhance Sentra's active safety capabilities while maintaining overall system affordability," said Yuki Amma, a research and development manager on Nissan's ADAS team.
These hardware changes, coupled with new software logic, enhanced performance of Sentra's safety systems in both real-world and industry test scenarios. It also allows the 2026 Sentra to add bicyclist and motorcyclist detection functionality, further enhancing the vehicle's capabilities.
Brighter lighting improves testing performance
All grades of the 2026 Nissan Sentra feature standard LED headlights, arranged in a modern, slim housing that helps define the sedan's upscale and sporty new design. These new lights – which use two LED projectors on each side for low beams, and one LED projector on each side for high beams – are brighter than the previous Sentra's standard halogen or available LED reflector units. This resulted in significant improvements to Sentra's performance in rigorous IIHS lighting tests, contributing to the TOP SAFETY PICK+ score, as well as improving night driving visibility for customers.
In addition to being brighter, the new LED projector headlights offer more precise control of light output directions, ensuring light goes where it's needed without creating too much glare for oncoming traffic. A meticulous process is employed at Sentra's assembly plant to ensure the headlamps are aimed accurately on each vehicle that is produced.
"No one likes being dazzled by oncoming headlights," said Kyle Martus, an engineer on the System & Component Test – Visibility Team at Nissan Technical Center North America in Michigan. "Through simulations and real‑world testing, we identified a headlamp aiming strategy that delivers excellent roadway illumination while reducing glare for oncoming traffic."
Design and development of the Sentra's headlights was shared across teams in Japan, Mexico and the U.S., including virtual simulation of the beam patterns and late-night, real-world drives.
The team had a major advantage that helped accelerate the development process: The individual projector elements inside each Sentra headlight are the same projectors used in the Nissan Murano, a fellow 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ recipient. So, although the distinct headlights still needed specific tuning and tweaking for Sentra, engineers had a head start in understanding their light output and beam patterns.
