Three automotive giants are joining forces to accelerate the industrial production of fuel cells for commercial transportation
Accelerating the deployment of hydrogen technology across the heavy-duty transportation sector, Volvo Group, Daimler Truck AG, and Toyota Motor Corporation have signed a binding agreement for Toyota to join cellcentric as an equal shareholder. Upon regulatory approval, each automotive manufacturer will hold a one-third stake in the fuel cell joint venture.
The strategic partnership aims to consolidate cellcentric’s position as a primary developer and mass-market manufacturer of heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell systems.
By combining engineering resources and purchasing volume, the three global manufacturing groups intend to enhance technology leadership, lower production costs, and scale supply chains for zero-emission commercial transport.
Operating as an independent business unit, cellcentric will manufacture fuel cell architectures for a broad spectrum of heavy applications, including Class 8 linehaul trucks, long-distance coaches, stationary power generation, rail equipment, and heavy off-highway machinery. Outside of their shared investment in cellcentric, Volvo Group, Daimler Truck, and Toyota will maintain independent commercial operations and continue competing across their vehicle sales networks.
In addition to component manufacturing, the partners will collaborate with energy stakeholders across the hydrogen value chain to advocate for refueling infrastructure expansion. The entry of Toyota alongside Volvo and Daimler signals a major consolidation of manufacturing capacity behind hydrogen fuel cell technology for long-haul transport.
