Rethinking Fleet Electrification With the Chevrolet Equinox EV

In a rapidly transitioning market, the Chevrolet Equinox EV presents itself as an option worth considering for fleet managers.



With its competitive pricing, impressive range and technological innovations, this compact utility vehicle, launched in spring 2024, checks all the boxes for companies looking to modernize their fleets and reduce operating costs while lowering their carbon footprint.



One of the Equinox EV's main assets lies in its acquisition cost. Starting at $48,325 for the 2 LT version (which serves as the entry-level model), it establishes itself as the most affordable electric SUV. This pricing strategy makes it accessible not only to companies already committed to electrification but also to those still hesitant to take the plunge.



"The Equinox targets a clientele that would never have considered an electric vehicle (EV) due to price," explains Holly Broome, National Marketing Director at Chevrolet. Demonstrating its popularity, it outpaced the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 in Canadian sales in August 2024, quite a feat for a model that had arrived in showrooms just months earlier. And the planned arrival of a more affordable trim, the 1 LT, during 2025 promises to further expand access to electromobility.



Range that outclasses the competition



Range is a decisive criterion for fleet managers, and Chevrolet's recent model excels in this area. Powered by an 85 kWh battery, it can travel up to 513 km on a single charge when equipped with front-wheel drive. This performance significantly surpasses the segment average, where competing vehicles struggle to exceed 400 km.



All-wheel drive versions display slightly lower but still competitive range. This small compromise comes with a power gain, as horsepower increases from 213 to 288. With the standard 11.9 kW charging module, it reaches 494 km. In the 2RS variant, where module capacity can climb to 19.2 kW (optional), electric range drops to 463 km.



Fast DC charging proves to be another major asset. When connected to a 150 kW DC charger (under ideal conditions), the Equinox gains 112 km in just ten minutes, reducing downtime. Some will also appreciate the quick charging on a Level 2 charger where each connected hour provides 54 km of range.



Beyond its range and frugal consumption (front-wheel drive: 2.2 Le/100 km (16.5 kWh)—all-wheel drive: 2.3 Le/100 km (18.5 kWh)), the Equinox EV shines through its advanced engineering aimed at maximizing energy efficiency. "The Chevrolet team did an excellent job thinking about the ecosystem and all the possibilities to help customers adopt the EV lifestyle," notes Ms. Broome. "The change can be easy; you just need the right technology to do it."



Technologies designed for energy efficiency



The Equinox EV features an advanced energy recovery system based on GM's Ultium platform. It captures energy released by the motors, battery, charging port, and passengers, and reconverts it for use by the heat pump. This technology is supported by the on-demand regeneration mode, activated via a paddle on the steering wheel, which can be used in conjunction with one-pedal driving.



For cold climates, Chevrolet also offers a battery preconditioning system. By using power from the charging station rather than the battery pack, the system preheats the cabin and protects valuable stored range. These innovations facilitate the transition to electric, eliminating concerns about range or winter performance.



The Equinox appeals to a broad audience. Its aerodynamic lines and linear lighting signature, both front and rear, give it a modern look without being polarizing. Playing the sportiness card, the RS version distinguishes itself, not through mechanics, but mainly through its appearance with gloss black accents (grille, wheels, window belt line). It also rides on 21-inch all-season tires (compared to the LT's 19-inch), and benefits from additional equipment such as the power liftgate, trailer hitch view, wireless charging, and multicolour ambient lighting.



Technology is also prominent inside. The cockpit houses an 11-inch driver information display, along with a 17.7-inch main unit combining navigation, entertainment, and high-definition surround vision. The system integrates Google, though Apple CarPlay is notably absent. To benefit from Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving, you'll need to add several thousand dollars. Known for reducing fatigue on long trips, it includes features like distance maintenance and automated lane changes.



Inside, the vehicle stands out for its comfort and versatility. The flat floor, made possible by the Ultium platform, creates generous rear seat space and impressive cargo volume. With 748 litres available (1,614 litres with second-row seats folded), the Equinox EV meets both private and business needs. However, there's no front trunk, as this space houses the motor.



Enhanced safety for drivers



Fleet managers will appreciate the wide array of standard driver assistance and safety systems, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with reverse capability, lane keeping assist, cyclist and pedestrian detection alert, and traffic sign recognition. These technologies not only reduce accident risks but also costs associated with repairs and insurance.



Additionally, the integration of tools like OnStar Fleet Service, myChevrolet app, and Ultium Charge 360 program ensures vehicle connectivity, facilitating daily use while supporting managers in fleet optimization.



Despite its substantial weight, the Equinox EV delivers smooth and secure handling. Its 238 lb-ft torque (333 lb-ft for AWD versions), rather modest for an EV, won't pin you to your seat at takeoff but is more than adequate for passing manoeuvers and acceleration. Good cabin soundproofing enhances overall comfort. Some controls, like the column-mounted gear selector, require an adjustment period but don't detract from the driving experience.

More than just an electric vehicle, the Equinox EV embodies a strategic vision for fleet managers, offering substantial fuel and maintenance savings while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its value proposition, advanced technologies, and unmatched range make it a choice option for companies looking to embrace greener, more responsible mobility.
