Canadian Heavy Industry Adopts AI Without Employer Governance
Research from Punchcard Systems reveals 49% of heavy industry workers use AI, yet 68% receive no formal training or corporate guidelines.
According to Punchcard Systems' State of AI at Work in Canada report, conducted alongside Angus Reid, artificial intelligence adoption is accelerating across Canadian shop floors, transportation fleets, and industrial worksites. While nearly half (49%) of heavy industry employees now utilize AI tools, more than two-thirds (68%) receive zero formal training or guidance from their employers.
For fleet managers, plant operations directors, and logistics executives—where 54% of transportation workers report role changes due to AI—the absence of clear corporate policy introduces operational friction. Across all sectors, 94% of workers using AI report having to manually rework output, while 18% state that AI errors have directly caused workplace issues before being identified.
Operationally, industrial personnel express high trust in AI for routine documentation, including looking up product specifications (77%) and drafting logs or paperwork (71%). However, skepticism dominates critical safety tasks: 45% of heavy industry workers refuse to trust AI systems with decisions impacting worker safety or physical risk on the shop floor.
