Charger Logistics Plans 500 Driverless Truck Fleet
Brampton-based Charger Logistics’ agreement to acquire 500 autonomous trucks targets lower total cost of ownership and resolves cross-border commercial driver capacity limits.
[Corps de l'article] : Autonomous driving developer Aurora Innovation and Canadian carrier Charger Logistics, headquartered in Brampton, Ontario, have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding for the purchase and deployment of up to 500 autonomous Class 8 trucks powered by the Aurora Driver system between 2027 and 2028. The deal expands an initial pilot deployed along the high-density Laredo cross-border freight corridor.
For Canadian motor carriers, commercial fleet operators, and freight logistics directors, the integration of Level 4 autonomous equipment offers a direct operational pathway to mitigate persistent long-haul driver shortages and improve asset utilization. Under the framework, Charger will operate the trucks under Aurora’s "Driver as a Service" (DaaS) recurring software model, enabling the transportation provider to retain physical asset ownership while capturing total cost of ownership (TCO) savings across continuous dispatch schedules.
According to Charger management, the driverless tractors will be linked directly to its proprietary transportation management system (TMS) to move cross-border volume for retail, automotive, pharmaceutical, and food-and-beverage shippers. The planned multi-year rollout demonstrates how Canadian cross-border fleet operations are positioning capital investments to scale automated transport across North American trade lanes.
