Cummins and Chevron Partner to Drive Fleet Adoption of X15N CNG Engine

Addressing the commercial transport sector's demand for scalable lower-carbon power, Cummins Inc. and Chevron have unified their operational alignment. The corporate collaboration is specifically engineered to streamline the fleet integration of alternative fuels through the real-world deployment of the newly released Cummins X15N engine, the industry’s first heavy-duty 15-liter natural gas powerplant.

Anchoring Cummins’ long-term Destination Zero sustainability framework, the X15N matrix brings traditional diesel-equivalent horsepower and torque parameters to a compressed natural gas (CNG) and renewable natural gas (RNG) architecture, solving historical power deficits in class 8 line-haul operations.

Peterbilt Demo Fleets to Verify Performance and Uptime

For fleet specifiers, logistics directors, and commercial truck centers managing rising carbon compliance penalties, the collaboration provides a functional testing pathway. Chevron has mobilized a dedicated fleet of Peterbilt day cabs equipped with the X15N powertrain, establishing a regional equipment evaluation program for commercial carriers.

“Chevron's demo program highlights the value of the X15N engine,” stated Brian Peterson, Chevron Renewable Fuels National Sales Manager. “We have Peterbilt day cabs to be able to provide fleets the experience of driving CNG vehicles to experience the horsepower and torque to see how well it operates compared to a traditional diesel engine.”

This co-managed evaluation architecture allows commercial carriers to audit payload cycle times, continuous fuel-burn metrics, and overall tractive effort before executing capital expenditures on large-scale alternative fuel transitions.
