FLEET SELECTOR: HYBRIDS & PLUG-IN HYBRIDS

These gas-plus-electric vehicles can potentially lower your costs

With gas prices so volatile, even a few litres per tank can add up quickly on your expense sheet. Where possible, adding hybrid models to your fleet can help to keep your gasoline expenditures down, especially over the long run. The vehicles on our list, which include many of the subcompact and compact models available this year, can work well for light-duty use, such as for salespeople, or many deliveries or service calls.

Along with self-charging hybrids, our list also includes plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Once they’ve been plugged in and charged, they have a range of electric-only driving. Once that depletes, they switch automatically to self-charging hybrid operation; and unlike an all-electric vehicle, they’ll continue to drive for as long as there’s fuel in the tank. They also take far less time to charge than an EV does, and depending on the tasks they need to do, they could potentially spend much or even all of their day’s driving on electricity alone.

On our charts below, our power numbers are for the vehicle operating on a combination of gas and electricity. Cargo capacity is with the rear seats upright and also with them folded down.

Honda CR-V Hybrid

Built in Canada, the CR-V comes in four trims in its hybrid configuration, and all of them with AWD. Its “two-motor” system acts as a series hybrid at lower speeds, with the electric motor driving the wheels while the gas engine powers the generator motor to supplement the battery. At higher speeds it becomes a parallel hybrid, with the gas engine and hybrid system driving the wheels directly for better efficiency.

The Specs:

Engine: 2.0-litre I4

Power: 204 hp/247 torque

Fuel Economy: 6.3 / 7.2 / 6.7 L/100 km city/highway/combined

Cargo Capacity:

Hyundai Tucson Hybrid/PHEV

The Tucson received a major update in 2025 and so continues pretty much unchanged. The entry trim is gas-only, while the two upper trims come only as hybrids, and the top Ultimate can be further optioned to a PHEV. Both the hybrid and PHEV are all-wheel drive.

The Specs:

Engine: Turbocharged 1.6-litre I4
