J.D. Power 2026 APEAL Study Shows Strong Surge in Owner Enthusiasm

New-vehicle owners are reporting higher levels of satisfaction and emotional engagement with their vehicles, driven by improvements in interior design, daily usability, and vehicle execution. According to the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, overall owner satisfaction reached 858 on a 1,000-point scale, up 7 points year over year to mark the fifth-largest annual gain in the study's history.

The study findings indicate that reducing vehicle defects directly enhances owner appreciation for styling, comfort, and driving dynamics. Interior design registered the largest category improvement (+11 points), with owners responding favorably to redesigned center consoles, optimized cupholders, and improved mobile device placement.

“Automakers have made real progress in reducing problems, but J.D. Power data makes it clear that quality alone isn’t enough,” said Frank Hanley, Senior Director of Auto Benchmarking at J.D. Power. “Owners are most enthusiastic when their vehicle not only works reliably but also feels thoughtfully designed and offers comfortable interiors, useful storage and technology that’s easy to live with. The brands that get both sides of that equation right see the strongest advocacy from their customers.”

The 2026 study highlights a notable surge in affinity for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which posted a 22-point year-over-year index increase, outperforming internal combustion engine vehicles across nearly every evaluation category. Additionally, the emotional satisfaction gap between premium and mass-market brands narrowed to 29 points, down from 66 points in 2008, as mass-market vehicles continue to close the execution gap in infotainment, driver-assist systems, and exterior styling.

In brand rankings, Porsche ranked highest among premium nameplates for a third consecutive year with a score of 896, while MINI topped the mass-market segment with a score of 875, followed by Hyundai (858) and Kia (857). Among corporate groups, BMW AG earned the highest number of segment-level model awards with six individual vehicle wins, including top honors for the BMW X6 and BMW 7 Series.
