Slashing Commercial Truck Rotor Service Times
Direct on-vehicle brake rotor resurfacing eliminates hours of unbillable tear-down labour while mitigating fleet CVSA out-of-service citations across heavy commercial trucks.
Brake servicing tool manufacturer Pro-Cut has updated its X1 HD on-truck brake lathe, engineered to machine commercial truck and trailer rotors directly on the axle hub. Driven by a 48-volt DC variable-speed motor paired with a 190 mm feed screw, the heavy-duty system completes a full rotor resurfacing pass in approximately 30 minutes without requiring hub disassembly.
For Canadian commercial fleet maintenance directors, heavy-duty truck shop managers, and certified diesel technicians, on-hub resurfacing bypasses the costly replacement of oversized wear components and sharply reduces bay turnaround times. Removing heavy commercial hub-and-rotor assemblies weighing over 100 pounds previously tied up bay hoists for up to six hours while introducing severe repetitive lifting and musculoskeletal injury hazards for service bay personnel.
According to Geoff Womer, business development manager at Pro-Cut, braking system defects remain the single largest source of mechanical out-of-service violations issued during Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) roadside audits. Deploying on-truck lathe equipment enables fleet service shops and franchised truck dealerships to true brake discs back to OEM specification, expediting vehicle returns to service while preserving parts replacement budgets.
