Trois-Rivières Transit Modernizes 65-Bus Fleet with Ericsson 5G Tech
Facing the shutdown of 3G networks across Canadian telecom providers, Trois-Rivières Transit deploys 5G edge computing routers to consolidate onboard fleet hardware.
Trois-Rivières Transit (STTR) has completed a fleet-wide technology overhaul across its 65 buses in partnership with Ericsson, engineering consultancy CIMA+, and software provider Systrans. The project replaces an aging, multi-vendor hardware setup with a unified in-vehicle network platform.
The infrastructure upgrade was driven by the decommissioning of legacy 3G cellular networks by Canadian telecommunications carriers, which threatened STTR’s previous computer-aided dispatch and automatic vehicle location (CAD/AVL) systems. The new setup utilizes the Ericsson Cradlepoint R1900 Series 5G mobile router, serving as both a high-speed gateway and an onboard edge computing device.
For public transit operators and commercial fleet managers, the open-architecture model eliminates hardware clutter by containerizing CAD/AVL software directly within the router. Fleet administrators can now manage fare collection, safety cameras, passenger information, and Transit Signal Priority (TSP) updates remotely via cloud management software, replacing manual on-site USB uploads.
