Volvo Trucks Rolls Out Unattended OTA Software Updates
Eliminating service bay visits for software management, Volvo Trucks activates unattended over-the-air programming capabilities for commercial fleets across North America.
Volvo Trucks North America has completed the North American rollout of its unattended over-the-air (OTA) remote programming functionality across the United States and Canada. The new "lock and leave" capability allows commercial drivers to initiate a vehicle software update, lock the cab, and step away during mandated break periods or overnight stops without interrupting fleet logistics.
For commercial fleet directors, maintenance managers, and service network personnel, remote deployment maintains current operational calibrations across engine control modules, automated transmissions, and battery management systems. Vehicles operating on updated software profiles experience 24 percent fewer unplanned stops.
“Technology makes our customers' operations more productive," said Peter Voorhoeve, President of Volvo Trucks North America. “As software plays a greater role in improving uptime, updating the software should be as easy and convenient as possible. Now a driver can lock and leave their truck while the update runs.”
Built on the 24-volt electrical architecture of the all-new Volvo VNL and VNR series, Volvo maintains connectivity across 220,000 commercial vehicles in North America. Predictive fault-code analytics enable technicians to pre-diagnose mechanical issues prior to shop arrival, contributing to a 95 percent first-time fix rate.

Volvo Trucks estimates its suite of remote diagnostics, predictive maintenance, and OTA capabilities has saved fleet customers over 100,000 days of unplanned downtime, equating to roughly $60 million in avoided operational costs.
