Zero-Emission Logistics: Toyota Tests Eight-Minute Heavy-Duty Hydrogen Refueling
Toyota’s high-flow 70 MPa hydrogen fueling technology matches traditional diesel fill times to minimize fleet downtime across commercial transport routes.
Toyota Motor North America’s Hydrogen Headquarters (H2HQ) division has validated high-flow hydrogen fueling for heavy-duty fuel cell trucks in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Laboratory of the Rockies. Operating under SAE J2601-5 standards, the system achieves fuel transfer rates up to 300g/s at 70 MPa pressure.
For commercial fleet operators, freight carriers, and logistics managers across North America, long charge times remain a key operational barrier for zero-emission heavy trucks. The high-flow standard delivers energy at an equivalent rate of a 20 MW fast charger, enabling a full tank refuel in approximately eight minutes to provide a driving range of up to 450 miles (725 km).
To support its commercial logistics operations, Toyota deployed two mobile hydrogen fuelers at its California distribution center while construction begins on a permanent, public-access fueling station. According to the manufacturer, testing these mobile and high-flow infrastructure solutions directly prepares its certified fuel cell powertrains for full commercial road operations in 2027.
